CAL FIRE establishes dedicated unit to test wildfire technology

10 Sec Scan
California has established a Fire Innovation Unit within CAL FIRE to test emerging tools against operational needs and coordinate procurement and deployment. The team will bring together firefighters, researchers and IT specialists.
What Changed
California legislation created a dedicated Fire Innovation Unit within CAL FIRE to coordinate technology research, testing, procurement and deployment. The unit will assess tools across the wildfire lifecycle rather than focus on a single operational function.
The Signal
For firefighters and agency technology managers, the unit creates a dedicated process for testing whether emerging tools solve operational problems under real-world conditions. Compatibility and security requirements make integration part of that evaluation, while safety and response benefits remain to be demonstrated.
60 Sec Understand
New legislation establishes CAL FIRE’s Fire Innovation Unit as a dedicated team for researching, testing and advancing wildfire technologies toward deployment. Its scope spans detection and mitigation through incident response, evacuation and post-fire recovery. The unit is already doing some work, with a formal launch scheduled for January under the legislation. The change is organizational rather than a new technology rollout: CAL FIRE already uses AI-enabled cameras, drones, satellite imagery, predictive fire modeling and lidar data. The unit will evaluate tools in real-world conditions, assess whether they address identified operational gaps and help successful candidates move toward adoption. Not every tool tested will be deployed. Integration with existing department systems, cybersecurity, privacy and state IT requirements remain conditions for adoption. For wildfire operations, the significance is a dedicated evaluation process connecting technology testing with firefighter needs and procurement—not evidence yet of improved response outcomes.
