Fairfax County Used Live GIS to Guide Gas Explosion Evacuations

A gas explosion in Fairfax County, Virginia, sent methane into neighboring basements, prompting an initial evacuation of 65 homes. Responders began with screenshots of online maps, then deployed a field mapping application and command-post dashboard showing parcel-level evacuation and utility status. Field crews recorded gas readings through ArcGIS QuickCapture, with elevated readings displayed automatically on a 3D neighborhood map. Police-provided drone imagery supplied the basis for 2D and 3D visualizations of damage. As readings changed, commanders narrowed the evacuation perimeter and tracked residents returning home over the 12-day response. The operational shift was from static reference maps to a shared, updating picture for fire crews, utilities, investigators and leadership. Esri’s account attributes rapid deployment to existing GIS expertise and years of investment in data literacy and infrastructure. It reports accelerated adoption for future incidents, but provides no independent measurement of time savings or safety improvements.
