Trimble acquires Terasat Japan to expand direct GNSS correction services
10 Sec Scan
Trimble has acquired Terasat Japan, an established positioning correction provider, expanding direct delivery of centimeter-level GNSS services for surveying, construction, automotive and agriculture customers in Japan. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What Changed
Trimble acquired Terasat Japan, bringing an established Japanese GNSS correction service provider into its positioning business. The deal expands direct service delivery and access to reference station data streams used in surveying and construction.
The Signal
For surveying and construction teams, network-delivered corrections support precise positioning without the need to operate a local base station. The acquisition changes who directly supplies that service in Japan; it does not establish an improvement in accuracy, pricing or coverage.
60 Sec Understand
The acquisition expands Trimble’s direct positioning service footprint in Japan through an existing provider rather than a newly built network. Terasat Japan supplies GNSS corrections using data from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan’s reference station network, which includes more than 1,300 stations nationwide. Its service already relies on Trimble’s Pivot system. Trimble VRS delivers real-time RTK corrections over cellular connections, allowing customers to obtain high-precision positioning without operating their own physical base stations. The article reports typical accuracy of around 2 centimeters horizontally and 3 centimeters vertically. The immediate change is ownership and direct access to the data streams used for Japanese surveying and construction applications, not a newly announced positioning capability. Trimble also identifies IoT and autonomous driving as potential expansion areas, but the material provides no deployment commitments or timelines for those applications.
