FireSat releases first fire imagery from three-satellite constellation

10 Sec Scan

Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space released initial wildfire imagery from three FireSat satellites still in commissioning. The images show small hotspots and repeated observations of a large fire; operational data delivery is planned for late 2026.

What Changed

The first three operational FireSat satellites have returned initial imagery, extending the program beyond its March 2025 demonstration mission. The release includes small-fire detections and repeated observations of a changing fire front, while commissioning continues.

The Signal

For fire managers, repeated infrared observations could help track active fronts and lingering hotspots rather than simply confirm that a fire exists. Practical value will depend on operational data delivery and revisit frequency; the faster global coverage described in the release remains a future target.

60 Sec Understand

FireSat has moved from a single demonstration satellite to initial imagery from three satellites launched July 7. Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space released observations spanning Australia, Portugal and the United States, including five views of an active front in the Big Grass Fire over three nights and two days. Multispectral infrared bands capture different aspects of fire behavior: small hotspots, intense burning and residual heat, alongside vegetation context. Muon Space says the instruments can detect fires as small as 5 × 5 meters; the release does not provide an independent performance assessment. The satellites remain in commissioning, so these images are evidence of initial sensing capability rather than an established operational data service. Fire agencies and scientists in EFA’s Early Adopter program are scheduled to receive data at least twice daily by the end of 2026. Global access is anticipated by 2028, with hourly global revisit expected by 2029.
